Fisher Ecology in Rhode Island

Project start date: 01 JUN 2020
Project end date: 24 AUG 2024

Using a combination of camera traps and GPS collars, we monitored fisher distributions and movement across the state of Rhode Island. We are have conclude all field work and analyses and are currently working on final publications.

The fishers in this study are the first fishers in the state who have been collared in Rhode Island history. We have tagged 56 fishers in the state after three seasons.

If you spot a fisher with a collar or find a collar, let us know!

Meet our Fishers!

Cultivating positive vibes for our
furry fisher friends

Public perceptions of fisher in Rhode Island are frequently negative and resentful. We are striving to combat these negative feelings that often stem from human-wildlife conflict, misinformation, or strong beliefs in common wildlife myths. We are working on a plan for cultivating positive vibes through public outreach.
Some key steps I am taking are:
Picture

Key Messages

Identification of key points we will use in our messaging to start the conversation about why the public should care about fisher.
Picture

Deliverables

Create a variety of resources about fisher for the public including a website, flyers, and presentations.
Picture

Engagement

Hold presentations, such as talks at town halls, provide farmers with demonstrations of predator exclusion devices for chicken coops, etc.
If you would like to collaborate with us on this process, or have any feedback on similar outreach programs you have conducted, please don't hesitate to email me.
